TOMORROW (2023)
Diasec print in aluminium light box 110cm x 62cmEmma van der Put’s work stems from long-term research into specific sites within a city’s public space. Each project centers on a chosen location, which serves as a framework for her investigation. Through this focused lens, she creates a series of films that reflect on various aspects of the place she observes. Part of these series are also short video loops and Diasec prints, which, in relation to her longer and more linear films, function as ‘footnotes’.
During the development of the Passage series, Emma van der Put began experimenting with large-scale Diasec prints presented in aluminium light boxes. The images displayed in these luminous containers originate from the same photographic archive she draws on for her films. For Van der Put, certain photographs possess the capacity to function as ‘loops’—self-contained moments—rather than being incorporated into a montage.
Within an exhibition, the light boxes share a similar luminous presence with the projected images and screens dispersed throughout the space. Yet, by presenting a ‘still’ moment, they draw attention to the rhythm and pacing of the moving-image works. Whereas in the films each new image eclipses the last, the light boxes reveal a continuous, enduring moment.
